Sustainable Fishing Gear Is Becoming a Bigger Industry Focus

Fishing nets and ropes are essential equipment for commercial fisheries, aquaculture and other marine operations. At the same time, the fishing industry is paying increasing attention to what happens to fishing gear after it reaches the end of its working life.

In 2026, several industry and research projects are focusing on fishing gear recycling, biodegradable materials and improved collection systems.

For fishing net manufacturers, importers and commercial fishing operators, sustainability is no longer only an environmental topic. It is also becoming part of product selection, material development and long-term equipment management.

Recycling Old Fishing Nets

Discarded and lost fishing gear can remain in the marine environment for long periods. This has led to growing interest in systems that collect, sort and recycle used fishing nets and ropes.

A recent European SEARCULAR project brought together fishing gear manufacturers, recyclers, researchers and fishing organizations to develop practical circular solutions. Its work included recycled ropes, biodegradable ropes, biodegradable fish aggregating devices and a port-based collection model for end-of-life fishing gear.

Recycling can give used fishing gear a second life by turning recovered materials into new products. Existing recycling initiatives have already demonstrated that discarded fishing nets can be processed into materials used for products outside traditional fishing applications.

Durability Still Matters

Sustainable fishing gear does not simply mean choosing a material that can be recycled.

For commercial fishermen, a net must first perform reliably in its working environment.

Important considerations include:

Net strength

Abrasion resistance

UV resistance

Water and weather exposure

Mesh stability

Twine diameter

Net construction

Expected service life

Repairability

A longer-lasting fishing net may require fewer replacements during its working life. Therefore, durability and end-of-life management should be considered together when selecting fishing gear.

Nylon, PE and Other Fishing Net Materials

Different fishing applications require different materials and constructions.

Nylon is widely used for fishing nets because of its flexibility, strength and abrasion resistance. Nylon monofilament and multifilament constructions can provide different characteristics for different fishing methods.

PE and HDPE are also widely used in commercial fishing, aquaculture, traps and other applications where lightweight construction and durability are important.

Other materials are also being studied for applications where reducing long-term plastic persistence is a priority. A 2026 review of biodegradable aquaculture net materials highlighted the potential of biodegradable polymers, while also noting that balancing durability and degradability remains a key challenge.

This means that there is unlikely to be one material that can replace all conventional fishing nets. The appropriate material should be selected according to the actual application and required service performance.

What Should Buyers Consider When Purchasing Fishing Nets?

For importers, distributors and commercial fishing operators, it is useful to consider the complete life cycle of a fishing net rather than focusing only on the initial purchase price.

Before placing an order, buyers can consider:

1. Application
What type of fishing operation will the net be used for?

2. Material
Is nylon, PE, HDPE, polyester or another material more suitable for the application?

3. Construction
Should the net be monofilament, multifilament, knotted or knotless?

4. Strength and Durability
What level of abrasion, tension and outdoor exposure will the net experience?

5. Service Life
How frequently will the net need to be replaced?

6. End-of-Life Management
Can the used net be collected, recycled, repaired or otherwise responsibly managed?

The Future of Fishing Gear

The fishing gear industry is moving toward a more comprehensive approach in which performance, durability and environmental responsibility are considered together.

UNEP's Northwest Pacific Action Plan is also supporting a 2026–2030 project focused on sustainable fishing gear management and recycling in Indonesia and Vietnam, showing that responsible management of fishing gear is becoming an important issue across different fishing regions.

For manufacturers and buyers, this trend creates an opportunity to develop fishing nets that are not only suitable for demanding fishing conditions, but are also designed with material efficiency, durability and end-of-life considerations in mind.

At QinHo, we focus on producing fishing nets and related fishing equipment according to different customer requirements. Material, mesh size, twine specification, dimensions and construction can be customized according to the intended application.

As the fishing industry continues to develop, choosing the right material and the right construction for the actual working conditions remains one of the most important ways to improve both fishing efficiency and the long-term value of fishing gear.
