Purse seine fishing is commonly used for catching schooling fish in coastal and offshore waters. The fishing method uses a large net to surround a school of fish, after which the bottom of the net is closed by hauling the purse line.
The construction of a purse seine depends on the fishing operation and target species. The overall length and depth of the net, mesh size, twine size and netting material all need to be considered when preparing the net.
A complete purse seine normally includes the main netting together with a float line, lead line, purse line and related ropes and accessories. The float line keeps the upper edge of the net at the required position, while the weighted lower edge helps the net sink and maintain its shape in the water.
Mesh size is also an important specification. It can be selected according to the target fish species and local fishing practices. Different sections of a purse seine may also use different mesh specifications depending on the design of the net.
