The Galician freezer trawler fleet will be able to return this summer to the Gambia fishing ground 23 years later. The fishing agreement reached last October between the African country and the European Union will come into force in the first half of July, with which the interested vessels will have access to one of the two licenses for demersal fishing granted to Spain (the third licence included in the pact will be for Greece).
The agreement, which is the first fishing agreement between the EU and the Gambia since 1996, includes fishing opportunities of 750 tonnes of hake and 25 percent of demersal species, 15 percent of cephalopods and 8 percent of crustaceans. To access this, they will have to pay EUR 500 per license (per quarter) and a fee of EUR 75 per tonne.
The agreement will be used by the fleet of the National Association of Cephalopod Vessels (ANACEF), which also has the power to enter this summer in other important fishing grounds such as Guinea-Bissau or Morocco, both pending entry into force.
